Peter Luger Great Neck

Peter Luger Steak House on Urbanspoon

Known to some as the steakhouse in New York, Peter Luger is an upscale steakhouse with two locations. The original is in Williamsburg, Brooklyn and the newer location is in Great Neck. Long Island. Both Peter Luger restaurants use the same meats and cooking processes and we were assured the food would be of the same quality at the Great Neck location as the original (though we really do have to try the Brooklyn Peter Luger sometime). The Great Neck location is not too far from the Americana Shopping Mall in Manhasset and the clientele mainly ranges from older patrons to families who live in the area. The decor is very elegant as well but none of what Peter Luger does is pretentious at all. Everything is about making the customer seem like they’re having a nice dinner at home.

The food however is where Peter Luger really shines. The menu is set up into appetizers, entrees and sides and of course there is a seperate section for their famous USDA Prime Beef Porterhouse Steaks. These can be ordered individual or to share depending on how many people you are with. To start we had the shrimp cocktail then the Porterhouse for Two with a side of the Luger’s Special German Fried Potatoes and the Broccoli. The shrimp in the appetizer were quite big and tasty. Actually, what impressed us most about the food at Peter Luger was the freshness and the overall quality of the ingredients. The Porterhouse for Two was easily the best steak we have ever had in New York. Though the Roasted Prime Rib at Minetta Tavern comes in a close second, the Porterhouse at Peter Luger was cooked perfectly, juicy, flavorful and quite simply a perfect steak all around. While we weren’t as impressed with the Special German Fried Potatoes that were a bit burnt, the broccoli was an exceptional side dish. It sounds strange saying this but that was easily the best Broccoli we’ve had as it was seasoned and steamed perfectly.

Overall we have to say Peter Luger is one of the best steakhouses in New York. We can’t say it’s the best simply because we haven’t tried them all yet, but after our fantastic dinner we can’t imagine that there’s a better steakhouse out there but perhaps one that is just as good.
